![]() open wide | The coot collection In August 2009 I was introduced to coots by a group of three dog walking ladies. You can learn a lot from dog walkers. Look over there, they said and pointed to a rough nest with 4 or 5 newborn coots some way out into the pool. Quite how a new born anything can look like a wise old man is beyond comprehension, but they did. Their sage like appearance and their constant antics got me hooked and I spent a good few hours watching and photographing their early development. As I write it is six weeks later and sadly the clutch size has been reduced to 1. I am still following the coots progress, and look them up each time I pass by. Parent coots are incredibly attentive spending all their time defending and feeding the young. I have seen some changes recently, as from 3 to 5 weeks old the young coot is starting to fend for itself more and more.
