good catch

The heron collection

I think herons are great to photograph, except that here in the UK they are very wary of people and like to keep at least 30 yards away if not further.

They will sit for ages preening or just motionless but when they decide to go fishing I get quite a sense of excitement trying to catch that critical moment.

There is a heronry of 50 nesting pairs at my local country park. Whilst the area surrounding the heronry is protected and off limits to even the most enthusiastic of bird watchers, the birds often fly into the public areas for a spot of fishing.
